Page Load Times maybe how your site is ranked is 2010

November 19 2009   Comments Off   Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

As a web site designer I often find myself trying to gently let clients know about page speeds and how adding in some of those wowie extras can bog down a page’s load time for visitors, especially with slower connections. This will infact adversely affect your site’s sales as well as visitor retention. Now it could also possibly affect how well or high your site ranks within the search engines as well.

I have always been a firm believer in something I was taught by a mentor years ago about page design. “People who surf into your site want the page to load quickly or they’ll leave.” The general rule of thumb is 10-15 seconds before you started loosing visitors to impatience. Yes, you can still have certain items on your page loading near the bottom if it, if said content loads in time for your visitors to read through your text before they get it to. Remember web site visitors skim your pages not read the entire page. Now your sites load time may directly affect how highly it ranks on Google.

Well it would seem that Google is vindicating me. In a Mike McDonald interview at WebCon Vegas with Matt Cutts of Google, Matt lets us know that there are many people at Google who believe the web should be a faster experience to make it more enjoyable. As well Matt states, “we are starting to think more and more about wheither page speed should be a ranking factor.” They’ve even rolled out a number of tools to facilitate this!

So as Google prepares to roll out Caffine and looks at the speed of the web, it’s a good idea to trust your designer on load times if you want your site to perform better in 2010 rankings. Google hasn’t implimented this as of yet, but from Matt’s comments in this interview it’s very likely that it will.

Follow Fridays on Twitter

June 3 2009   Comments Off   Tags: , , , ,

Twitter, the online sensation has a new opt in idea for Fridays thanks to Micah Baldwin. The idea is that people using Twitter will add in a “hash tag” to their posts, #FollowFriday, with a list of one to two people who are current users of the popular social networking site and software via your own recommendations.

To partake in Follow Fridays you simply type in #FollowFriday, a persons user name followed by a reason as to why someone else should follow that person on Twitter. This helps users to develop a quality list of people to discover and follow online for valuable products, services and information. This is also a great way to build a community of like minded and interested people.

For us here at Dayla Media we will be trying our hand at recommending our top clients to be followed on Twitter in the hopes of adding to their overall marketing and development.

This is just one tip of hopefully many more that we’ll be adding in from time to time at the Dayla Blog.

Over the next while we will be exploring not only social marketing but on site chat modules via today’s more popular services ie: Yahoo Messenger and MSN Windows Live Messenger. Yes MSN is tyring to come up todate with new web site chat module. But it is not for the faint of heart of the part time DIY’er. We will be implementing this new MSN feature here at Dayla Media’s own site www.daylamedia.ca so that you can see it working live. It will add new functionality for our site visitors and hopefully increase potential inquiries live online.

New Social Networking Categories

We decided that there are many social networking avenues that you can follow along the way in promoting your business online. Thus we’ve created categories specifically for these avenues of online promotion and marketing in the hopes that our findings will help you out. As we find new and ingenious ideas, tips and tricks in using each we’ll put add our findings into their appropriate section for you to find easily and quickly. For example FaceBook and Twitter each have their own categories now.

Social Networking and Marketing

We have decided to dig deeper in the the nuances of the social networking phenomena that has gripped the cyberworld.  You can now find us located on MySpaceand Facebook as well as get the Tweets from our Twitter updates as we post them.  They’ll be sent directly to you via your Twitter account, if you have one as we’re sure you do.  Most people these days who are online are a member of one form of social network site or another.

Wherever people gather business and marketing seem to soon follow and in cyberspace there is no difference.  You’ll notice that your pages on your FaceBook and MySpace profiles are increasingly being cluttered more and more with advertising.  This advertising is targeted directly to you via different methods behind the scenes. The ads you see are deemed, by the advertisers and software used to shoot it to you,  as being directly required for you to view.  Advertisers can choose their geographical locations to target as well as age and interest groups.  You see when you join these social networks you are also joining and using areas that reveal your personal preferences. The site administrators can then use this information to determine which marketing target audience you will fit for different advertisers.

Being in the business of helping companies reach their own target audiences, Dayla Media keeps itself up-to-date on the latest trends in the marketing world and even does it’s own marketing research.  After all, if we wouldn’t try it out on our own web site, why would we suggest it to our clients?  Our client’s business and sites are our top priority in getting the world to not only know they are there but to use there sites.

Currently we are joining in the ranks of businesses who have signed up to Twitter, FaceBook and MySpace.   Each of these networks has it’s own advantages and disadvantages we are finding out.  There are difference rules and regulations for being on them as well as different ways to best communicate your product or service to those on them.  Our research into this marketing on the superhighway has kicked back some relatively surprising outcomes and we are pleased to have learned a few tips and tricks along the way.  Each community also has it’s own branches of helpful administrators who are always willing to lend a hand.  In learning how these social networks and their followers conduct themselves, we as a company are better able to assist our customers in their own marketing if they so wish to target these avenues.
